Starting a career in Trauma and Biohazard cleaning, or adding specialist services to your existing business, begins with understanding the work involved. From recognising hazards to managing contaminated materials, this sector requires a careful, informed and professional approach.

At The National Academy of Specialist Cleaners (NASC), our training introduces delegates to the knowledge, working methods and safety considerations behind specialist cleaning. Through classroom learning, demonstrations, discussion and an additional practical training day, we help you build a foundation for your next steps in the industry.

Here is what you can expect when you train with us.

Who Is NASC Training For?

Our training welcomes people entering the industry for the first time, as well as experienced cleaning professionals who want to develop their knowledge or expand their services.

You do not need previous Trauma or Biohazard cleaning experience to attend. We introduce the fundamental principles before exploring the hazards, processes and responsibilities associated with different specialist cleaning environments.

The training can also be valuable for landlords, property managers, facilities teams and professionals whose work brings them into contact with potentially contaminated properties.

Whatever your background, the aim is to help you understand how specialist cleaning work should be approached.

Face-to-Face Classroom Learning

NASC delivers training face to face in small classroom sizes of up to 12 people at a time, giving delegates the opportunity to ask questions, discuss unfamiliar subjects and learn directly from experienced industry professionals.

Our training facilities are based in Little Walden, Essex, where classroom sessions introduce the technical knowledge behind Trauma and Biohazard cleaning. You will also see examples of products, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and cleaning equipment, supported by explanations and demonstrations.

These sessions connect the course material with situations you may encounter at work. Discussions help explain why particular methods, equipment and precautions are appropriate for different environments.

Our three-day Trauma and Biohazard Cleaning course provides the core learning, with an optional additional practical day for delegates who want to apply their knowledge in a controlled training setting.

What Does the Course Cover?

Trauma and Biohazard Cleaning involves a range of environments, each with its own risks and challenges. Our training introduces delegates to subjects including:

  • Bloodborne pathogens: understanding potential exposure to blood and bodily fluids, the associated hazards and diseases, and appropriate protective measures.
  • Unattended death and related specialist cleaning: exploring the considerations and procedures involved in cleaning following an unattended death, murder or homicide, or suicide. This module also covers Crime Scene Cleaning and Forensic Cleaning.
  • Needles and sharps: recognising hazards and understanding appropriate collection, handling and disposal methods.
  • Hoarding and property clearance: considering site conditions, working methods, equipment and waste management.
  • Pigeon guano cleaning: understanding the hazards, protective equipment and procedures associated with this work.

Across these subjects, we explore how to prepare for a job, recognise hazards and follow a structured, professional approach.

You can browse our specialist cleaning courses to learn more about the individual training areas.

Understanding Risk Assessments, PPE and Waste Management

Before cleaning begins, you need to understand the environment and the hazards it presents.

During training, delegates learn about identifying hazards, assessing risks and producing a basic risk assessment. We also explain how the choice of PPE, equipment and control measures relates to the work being undertaken.

Waste management is another central subject. Different jobs can generate different waste streams, so delegates need to understand the considerations involved in handling, separating and arranging appropriate disposal of contaminated materials/waste.

These topics run throughout the training, helping you connect individual cleaning tasks with the wider responsibility to protect yourself and others.

Learning from Industry Experience

Some of our trainers have over 20 years of experience working in the industry. They bring first-hand Specialist Cleaning experience into the classroom, with some having completed jobs as recently as the week before your course begins. NASC’s face-to-face training connects your learning with real working experiences, drawing on the challenges, decisions and practical considerations our trainers have encountered in the field.

Throughout the course, you will have opportunities to discuss scenarios, ask questions and explore why different situations require different working methods. This helps you understand both how a task is approached and the reasoning behind each decision.

On top of this, you will have the opportunity to discuss the business side of Specialist Cleaning, including how to price jobs accurately, calculate running costs and account for expenses such as insurance, and learn which insurances are best for this industry. Our trainers will share practical business advice drawn from their own experiences, including mistakes they have made, the lessons they have learnt and the changes they introduced to achieve better results.

You will also learn alongside delegates from a range of backgrounds. For newcomers, these shared discussions provide a valuable introduction to the sector. For existing cleaning professionals, they offer opportunities to reflect on current practices, exchange perspectives and develop specialist knowledge.

What Happens on the Optional Practical Day?

Delegates who choose the four-day programme attend an additional practical training day.

At our specially designed practical training facility, you can apply classroom learning to realistic scenarios under the guidance of experienced trainers. This gives you an opportunity to explore equipment, PPE and working methods in a controlled environment.

The practical day helps connect the theory with the decisions involved in approaching a specialist cleaning task. It also provides further opportunities to ask questions and develop confidence while receiving guidance.

How Are Delegates Assessed?

Assessments form part of the training and help confirm your understanding of the subjects covered.

On our Trauma and Biohazard Cleaning course, delegates complete five multiple-choice tests (one test after each module), with a required pass mark of at least 80% for each test.

The assessments give you an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of the hazards, precautions and procedures discussed during the course. Asking questions throughout the classroom sessions can help you clarify anything you are unsure about before completing the relevant assessment.

What Certification Will You Receive?

NASC courses are CPD accredited. Following successful completion of the training and assessments, delegates receive up to eight certificates, recognising the learning they have undertaken:

  • Five module certificates — one for each successfully completed module.
  • One NASC course attendance certificate.
  • One CPD course attendance certificate.
  • One practical day attendance certificate — for four-day course delegates only.

Delegates completing the 3-day course receive seven certificates, while those who complete the 4-day course, and also attend the practical day, receive eight certificates. However, delegates will only receive all certificates if they pass all five modules. If they fail, they will not receive any certificates.

Our training provides a foundation for continued learning and development as you gain experience within Specialist Cleaning.
