Suitable protective equipment

Personal protective equipment must reflect the risk assessment. It may include puncture-resistant gloves used with disposable gloves, protective footwear, eye protection and suitable workwear. PPE supports a safe system of work but does not replace careful handling.

Safe searching and retrieval

Operatives should never pick up a discarded needle with bare or gloved hands. Suitable equipment, such as purpose-designed needle pickers, forceps or tongs, should be used.

Hands must not be placed inside bags, containers or concealed spaces where the contents cannot be seen. HSE guidance also warns against collecting broken glass by hand.

Sharps handling and disposal

Sharps handling training should teach operatives to minimise movement, avoid recapping or manipulating needles and place each item directly into a suitable sharps container.

Containers should be secure, puncture-resistant, easy to close and never overfilled. HSE guidance recommends disposal at the point of use or as close to the activity as practicable.

Associated decontamination

After the sharp has been removed, any blood or body fluid contamination must be treated through an appropriate decontamination procedure. This includes selecting the correct disinfectant, observing its contact time and disposing of contaminated materials through the correct waste route.

Removing the visible needle does not necessarily make the entire area safe. Operatives must continue to look for small fragments, damaged sharps and contaminated materials before completing the clean.

Needles and sharps training must explain what to do following an injury. HSE advises gently encouraging a puncture wound to bleed, without sucking or scrubbing it, and washing it with soap and water.

The incident should be reported immediately and urgent medical advice obtained through the organisation’s exposure procedure.
